During those 4 years we investigated many types of boats that we liked and would work for us. The vast majority of liveaboard cruisers purchase a trawler or sailboat. Since most people select a trawler we looked at several during the boat shows, but couldn’t really feel that it was for us. We did, however, fall in love with Power Catamarans. We loved the roominess, smoothness of operating and shallow draft. We also knew that we would have people coming to travel with us so we wanted 3 bedrooms.
We made a list of those items that were important to us and prioritized them, but what we eventually bought was a compromise. Our “Dream Boat” never materialized when it was our time to purchase and we definitely would need to buy it used.
Fortunately, we found an owner’s version of the 47 ft. Leopard Power Cat that was custom made for one owner. Most of these boats are used for charter in the Caribbean with 4 beds. This one has one whole pontoon with the owner’s quarters. The other pontoon has 2 beds and 2 full bathrooms. The best feature is the cockpit where it is outdoor living at its best.
Of course, as nice as the boat was we felt that we needed a number of modifications in order to make this a cruising boat for us: new canvas, new refrigeration, solar panels, satellite TV, water maker, larger water heater and purchasing a dinghy. Those were the big projects, but many smaller projects were made so sitting at the dock was quite productive!
UPDATE: We did finally get our “Dream Boat”. It is the 50 Endeavour Power Cat. See my article in 2019 on Introducing the New Gypsies Palace.
Naming Gypsies Palace
It was a given that the name of the boat would be something from a Jimmy Buffett song since we are both Parrotheads and members of an actual Parrothead Club. We finally decided on Gypsies Palace from “Gypsies in the Palace” and the idea that we are water gypsies in a Palace that has a 25 ft beam. By the way, we also maintain a “party box” of pirates flags, leis, hula skirts, hats, maracas and beads so we can Party with a Purpose in a moment’s notice!
